The painting stays inside the stomach of the artist during three days. He experiences a “miracle” the origin of which he does not know, but he knows that it happens inside himself: an inspiration takes form. In order to obtain such an achievement it is necessary to remain in the world of art for long time, to go into raptures, to dirty oneself with colours, to paint for the pleasure of painting without any other purpose; it is necessary to grow fervent. The artist teaches us that life cannot be saved, it must be devoted! And in the moment of the painting creation he knows himself, a new world and takes profit of a devoted life.
Leo used to take inspiration from many sources: from the beauty of nature, from the art of other great painters, from people and from meetings… He felt the necessity of denouncing social damages: it was a constant pain which was arising from the deepest part of his soul. The charm of a painting comes from the same miracle which saw its birth, in the “stomach” of the artist.
One of the recurring themes of Leo’s paintings is the one of the FISH. They are not seen as a simple graphic representation, but as a symbol of a suffering situation: fish suffer because of polluted waters caused by men who have destroyed the benediction of their natural habitat. Leo was particularly sensible towards social damages caused by intolerant human behaviour and his condemnation of such a barbaric behaviour is constantly present in his paintings.
It is obvious, at this point, to think about the pages of the Bible which tell us about Jonah in the stomach of a big fish during three days and three nights. We know that the biblical pages are full of symbolisms and tell us about the mystery of life. The same is for a painting.
